Yes, I did nearly faint. Two literary lions in the MINI Cooper. My gratitude knows no bounds!

I snagged a few authors to sign the car after the Authors in Bars event at Book Fest. The phone sort of captured the moments and the mood.

First was Maggie Shipstead:

Followed by Rosie Schaap:

Next Will Schwalbe:

And finally poet

Proud to say we all managed to wake up early the next day for flights, brunches, and the pig roast.

The wonderful Lisa Genova was on hand in the Great Hall of the Atheneum to discuss her novel LOVE ANTHONY in conjunction with the island’s Autism Speaks organization. Afterward she signed the MINI, though my iphone was not up to the task of capturing the moment. I did manage to have a nice glass of wine with Lisa and her wonderful assistant afterward though. Cheers to Lisa’s next book!

If we had only known how much work it would be to put on a book festival we… would most likely do it all over again. It is a gargantuan effort but at the end we get to accumulate a few more signatures for the car 😉

The first in 2012 was the amazing Jack Gantos, who did a wicked cool skull on my driver’s side door.

Next was poet Sophie C

My shy favorite teacher of all time, novelist and memoirist Peter Scott:

The Clive Cussler that Got Away

I was so utterly star-struck by Clive Cussler that I forgot to ask him to sign the car. It’s pathetic but true… while he was in Mitchell’s I hid, only to realize the folly of my ways and chase him down the street for a picture. Here he is with his lovely wife, who I think agreed to come back possibly someday for Book Festival. Who can remember details.

Image

Here he is with me. My body was there to prove it happened, though my memory is faint. Why I was so verklempt by this particular author is a mystery… I guess it has to do with youth and rockstardom.

Image

The best part of this visit was that I sent him over to Bookworks to sign a book for my dear friend and co-worker Cristina’s brother-in-law Cliff Johnson, who is possibly (okay, definitely) an even bigger fan than I. Clive Cussler, Prince Among Men, signed the book “To Cliff, the biggest adventurer of us all.” Is that not the best dedication you’ve ever heard?!? I defy you to beat it.

Geraldine Brooks & Tony Horwitz – June 3, 2012

I remember that it was June 3, because that’s my birthday and it was a huge treat to have these illustrious visitors from the Other Island (Martha’s Vineyard). CALEB’S CROSSING was new that year and hearing Geraldine speak about it was a highlight of my bookselling life to date. How cool to have this power couple on hand to sign the MINI, oh and to speak at the Unitarian Meeting House.

Image

I love that after the event, Geraldine went shopping at my friend Beth English’s wonderful shop CurrentVintage, and came back to Mitchell’s in the cutest dress ever.

In the fall of 2011 we had a dog themed event at the brewery. My husband Randy and I started the brewery and love the dog-centric mystery novels by Spencer Quinn, so it was good times all around.Image

Wendy graced the MINI with her signature and, naturally, an image of her iconic Barnaby Bear.

It’s a tradition every Pops Saturday in August that Wendy Rouillard and Elin Hilderbrand do a joint signing, sometimes at Bookworks and sometimes at Mitchell’s. You can practically plan your calendar around it. ImageImage
